In this lesson, you will learn how to perform a handstand turn in gymnastics. You should practice this skill before attempting any saltos or acrobatic skills that involve rotation. Start practicing the handstand turn as soon as you can hold a gymnastic handstand for 5 seconds or more.

Execution
- Get Into a Handstand
Begin by entering a proper handstand (see the Handstand lesson).- Keep your right leg, torso, and arms aligned.
- Fully extend your arms and legs.
- Engage your abdominals—don’t hollow your back.
- Initiate the Turn (Step 1)
The handstand turn should be executed in two steps:- Move your right hand across the midline, placing it to the left side of your left hand.
- Rotate your right hand 180 degrees (your fingers now point in the opposite direction—see illustration).
- This may feel awkward at first. Many beginners mistakenly adjust the left hand first, but it's better to start with the right.
When the right hand moves, your entire body (trunk and legs) should rotate together as a single unit.
Do not twist your torso before your legs—everything turns at once. - Complete the Turn (Step 2)
- Once the body has turned, reposition your left hand so both hands are back at shoulder width.
- Keep your arms straight and your core engaged throughout.
- Your legs should remain together, vertically aligned, and fully extended.
- Exit the Handstand
Lower yourself down just as you would from a regular handstand.- Lower your left leg first.
- Reach your fingertips upward as you return to standing, just like in the starting position.
Advice
- Do not begin the turn until you've reached a perfect, straight handstand position.
- The method above describes a 180° turn in 2 steps.
- It’s also possible to perform the 180° turn in 3 steps, starting with the left hand.
- Once you're comfortable with the 180° turn, you can try a 360° handstand turn, which is typically done in 4 steps.
