Extreme Martial Arts - Flashkick Layout

In this lesson, you will learn how to perform a flashkick layout as seen in gymnastics and extreme martial arts. A flashkick is essentially a backflip with a step-out landing. There are two main variations:

  • Tucked Flashkick – performed from a standing position.
  • Layout Flashkick – performed with the body fully extended, typically after a round-off or a back handspring.

This lesson focuses on the layout flashkick variation. Before attempting this skill, you should already be comfortable with the tucked flashkick and the backflip in layout position. You can find detailed instructions in the Artistic Gymnastics section.

Execution

  1. Begin with a round-off, or use a trampoline or springboard to gain height. You can also practice safely by jumping into water.
  2. Take off with both legs simultaneously, just like in a backflip layout.
  3. Swing your arms upward to vertical as you initiate the jump.
  4. Keep your eyes looking forward until you've reached maximum height (refer to the Gymnastic Back Flip Layout lesson for guidance).
  5. At the peak of your jump:
    • Spread your legs
    • Whip your extended arms downward
    • Keep your upper body straight, core tight, and avoid tucking.
  6. Land first on your right leg, then your left. Lift your arms to finish the move cleanly.

Advice

  • Always practice this move on mats or in a safe environment.
  • Training suggestion: Practice the flashkick layout using a trampoline and a raised box, or by jumping from a springboard into water for safety.
  • Master the tucked flashkick before moving on to the layout variation.
